FORT WORTH, Texas (June 9, 2007) - Canadian Club driver Dario Franchitti piloted his way to his sixth-consecutive top-five finish of the season, finishing fourth in the Bombardier Learjet 550 Saturday night at Texas Motor Speedway. Franchitti extended his lead in the IndyCar Series championship and is currently 12 points ahead of teammate Tony Kanaan.
After losing fifth gear during the first round of pit stops, Franchitti struggled to pick up spots on the track with each restart, but even with the problem, he quickly caught the leaders and remained in contention for the win. Franchitti suffered another setback under the first caution when he was forced to make a second consecutive pit stop as a penalty for coming in under the caution before the pits were open. Despite both of these setbacks, Franchitti continued to battle with the leaders throughout the 228-lap event running in the top five for the majority of the race.
Sam Hornish Jr. captured his first victory of the season, while Franchittis teammates Kanaan and Danica Patrick came across the line in second and third, respectively. The green flag will drop on the eighth round of the IndyCar Series at the Iowa Corn Growers Indy 250 at Iowa Speedway. Live coverage of the event can be seen on ABC beginning at 1 p.m. (EDT) and can be heard on XM Satellite Radio channel 145, the exclusive home of the IndyCar Series.
Dario Franchitti, #27 Canadian Club Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"Losing fifth gear in the first pit stop made it very difficult on the restarts. We lost momentum on the restarts, which was when others really seemed to capitalize. I think I broke it coming through the gears after the pit stop. All in all it was a really good day for the Canadian Club team for the championship. We took advantage of some other people's misfortunes and we raced as hard as we could today."
