JOLIET, Ill. (Sept. 9, 2007) - Dario Franchitti became the third driver in IndyCar Series history to capture the Indianapolis 500 and the IndyCar Series championship in the same season as he drove the Canadian Club car to victory at Chicagoland Speedway on Sunday. The victory was Franchitti's fourth of the 2007 season and the first career championship for the winningest British driver in American open-wheel racing history.
Franchitti, who started on the pole, entered the race with a three-point lead over second-place driver Scott Dixon. From the opening laps of the event, Franchitti was forced behind a few cars but still remained among the top five. In order for Franchitti to win the IndyCar Series championship, he needed to finish ahead of Dixon. However, Franchitti found himself trailing Dixon for the majority of the race. As the race drew to a conclusion, Dixon and Franchitti were the only two cars on the lead lap. In Turn 3 on the final lap of the 200-lap event, Dixon, who was still leading, began to run out of fuel. Franchitti went around the 2003 IndyCar Series champion and crossed the finish line in first place, clinching Andretti Green Racing's third IndyCar Series championship in four seasons.
The victory was Andretti Green Racing's ninth win in 17 races of the 2007 season. It also extended AGR's IndyCar Series record of 32 victories.
Dario Franchitti, #27 Canadian Club Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
“Most of the race I couldn't do anything. I couldn't pass the guys in front because they were running side by side. There were times the car wasn't handling so well, and then in that last bit it was handling well, but I couldn't do anything. And then people started pitting, Dan (Wheldon) ran out of fuel and it was just Scott (Dixon) and I. We came down that backstretch and I was drafting him trying to get a slingshot. Just as I pulled out I saw him slow down and I almost hit the back of him as I was just going out. It was some good fuel saving and some great strategy from my boys on the Canadian Club team and the whole Andretti Green Racing team. They are the best team in the world.”
Allen McDonald, Race Engineer, #27 Canadian Club Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
“What a fantastic year. It was a great race and was exemplary of what our season has been like. We had close racing today. The Canadian Club crew did a great job on the pit stops and the car preparation was fantastic. Dario drove a great race today and was superb all season. It's just awesome. I'm so happy for the team and for Dario."
