SPARTA, Ky. (Aug. 11, 2007) - Canadian Club driver Dario Franchitti finished eighth Saturday night in the Meijer Indy 300 presented by Coca-Cola at Kentucky Speedway. Franchitti's lead in the championship is now eight points over Scott Dixon and 52 over teammate Tony Kanaan.
Franchitti consistently ran in the top three throughout the majority of the race, leading 52 laps before slipping back into the eighth position just before his final pit stop. While entering the pit lane for that last stop on lap 179, Franchitti hit a cone and was forced to change the front wing on the Canadian Club car. From there, Franchitti dove home to an eighth-place finish.
As he crossed the finish line for the final time, Franchitti made contact with Kosuke Matsuura, which sent Franchitti's car airborne in another terrifying end-over-end flip. The car sustained considerable damage, but Franchitti walked away uninjured for the second-straight week.
Kanaan earned his fourth win of the season, which was Andretti Green Racing's 30th IndyCar Series win. Scott Dixon finished in second while AJ Foyt IV and NYSE driver Marco Andretti finished third and fourth, respectively.
The IndyCar Series will next take to Infineon Raceway on Sunday, Aug. 26 for the Motorola Indy 300. ESPN will provide live coverage of the event at 3:30 p.m. (EDT). The race can also be heard live on XM Satellite Radio channel 145.
Dario Franchitti, #27 Canadian Club Dallara/Honda/Firestone
“It was my fault. I heard ‘checkered' just as I hit Kosuke (Matsuura). That was my second mistake in the race and it could have been a big one.”
John Anderson, Race Strategist, #27 Canadian Club Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"Dario went high coming off of Turn 4 and lost a number of positions. Then we collected a cone coming into the pits that got jammed up into the front wing. We really need to get back into it as championship contenders."
