SEBRING, Fla. (March 18, 2007) - Dario Franchitti and Andretti Green Racing's class win in Saturday's Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring was special for a number of reasons, especially for the three drivers that brought the XM Satellite Radio Acura home at the head of the American Le Mans Series LMP2 field.
Franchitti, Bryan Herta and Tony Kanaan have raced against and with each other for more than a decade during the course of their careers, but shared an entry for the first time on Saturday and the three friends made the most of the opportunity. Piloting a brilliantly-prepared Acura as part of the manufacturer's and team's debut in the series, the three drivers proved to be quick and mistake-free for the first 11 hours, which afforded them the necessary cushion to weather a final hour that included a number of technical challenges.
The Andretti Green trio, which impressed many by remaining on the lead lap with the eventual overall winning Audi beyond the 10-hour mark, ended the day in second place overall and finished two laps ahead of its closest LMP2 competitor. The class win comes less than eight months after the team announced it would join the Acura effort in ALMS this season.
Franchitti and Kanaan return to their full-time assignments next Saturday at the IndyCar Series season-opening XM Satellite Radio Indy 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Dario Franchitti, #26 XM Satellite Radio Acura/ARX-01a: "I want to reiterate the effort the AGR team put in. As drivers we have an easy job. Everyone put in such a great affort. I've heard about Sebring my whole life and it's something I've always wanted to do. It's something my brother has done a lot and he said it was so much fun. And, I'm happy to come here and win one."
