BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW THAT

Drivers Visit Local Target Store:  Target drivers Scott Dixon and Dario Franchitti took time following qualifying for the 39th Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach to visit the local Target store in Signal Hill, Calif.  The drivers participated in a team “huddle” meeting in the afternoon and then toured the store before meeting with employees and answering questions about the IZOD IndyCar Series.

Lexar Partners with Dario:  Target Chip Ganassi Racing (TCGR) and Lexar announced this week a continuation of their partnership that will see two primary paint schemes for the second straight season on the No. 10 Honda of four-time INDYCAR Champion and three-time Indianapolis 500 Winner Franchitti.  The No. 10 Lexar Honda will debut this weekend in the Itaipava Sao Paulo Indy 300 on the streets of Sao Paulo, with the second paint scheme coming later in the season at the Baltimore Grand Prix on the streets of Baltimore on Sunday, Sept. 1 (2:00 PM ET, NBC Sports Network).

VIZIO and Hulu join Chip Ganassi Racing Teams:  Chip Ganassi Racing Teams (CGRT) announced last week new sponsorships with VIZIO and Hulu which will see the brands carried on two racings’ biggest stages on Memorial Day Weekend at the Indianapolis 500 and Coca Cola 600.  The programs include major associate level branding on both Ryan Briscoe’s No. 8 NTT DATA Honda in the IZOD IndyCar Series for the 97th Running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and on Jamie McMurray’s No. 1 McDonald’s/Cessna Chevrolet SS in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) for the Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 26.

Surging in Sao Paulo?:  Team Target has yet to win on the streets of Sao Paulo, but Franchitti started from pole in the first IZOD IndyCar Series race in Sao Paulo in 2010.  Under CART sanction from 1996-2000, Team Target competed in Rio de Janeiro at the 1.864-mile Emerson Fittipaldi Speedway.  In that span, the team scored one win (Juan Pablo Montoya - 1999), one pole (Alex Zanardi – 1996), five top-5s, eight top-10s, led a total of 275 laps and completed 1,066 out of a total of 1,230 laps.

Sao Paulo Statistics:  In Sao Paulo, Team Target has one pole, led a total of 38 laps and completed 381 out of a total of 382 laps on the 2.536-mile street circuit.

99 Wins and Counting…:  The Target Racing Program, which began with Target and Chip Ganassi Racing in 1990, is just one win shy of the 100-win plateau.  The first win for the program came in 1994 with Michael’s Andretti’s Indy car victory at Surfers Paradise, Australia, when the team was merely a two-car open wheel program.  Ninety-eight wins later, the program’s umbrella not only includes involvement in the IZOD IndyCar Series, but in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) and the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series.  The partnership between Target and Chip Ganassi Racing is one of the longest consecutive team partnerships in motor racing history.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR BARBER

Dario Franchitti and No. 10 Lexar Team

In the Off-Weekend:   Franchitti spent Monday following Long Beach at HPD (Honda Performance Development) in California, then was directly off to Texas Motor Speedway (TMS) as the team had a night test in preparation for the June 8 race at TMS under the lights.  From there he was off to Scotland to enjoy some time at home, sailing with friends before the flight to Brazil.

Last Time at Sao Paulo:  Franchitti started the race in second until contact from behind resulted in a reverse spin on a lap 27 restart.  The No. 10 team returned to the race in 22nd and worked their way back into the top-give and Franchitti finished fifth, his highest finish of the first four races of the 2012 season.

Long Beach Race Rewind:  Franchitti and the No. 10 team started on pole position for the second year in a row at Long Beach.  The No. 10 team led through the first caution period on lap 3 and then again for 22 laps.  Franchitti pit from the lead for the first time on lap 29 of 80 but had a slow stop that dropped him from the point.  While running in third after a lap 55 restart, the No. 10 team had to avoid a lapped car going for position and slid one spot to fourth, where they would ultimately finish.

Dario Returns:  Four-time IZOD IndyCar Series Champion (2007, 2009, 2010, 2011) and three-time Indianapolis 500 Winner, Franchitti, returns to TCGR in 2013 for his fifth season alongside two-time Champion and 2008 Indianapolis 500 Winner, Dixon.  Franchitti is tied for seventh on the all-time wins list with 31 and holds sole possession of eighth on the all-time poles list with 30.

Rarified Air:  Dario is one of only five drivers to win the Indianapolis 500 and the series title in the same season more than once.  By winning the 2012 Indianapolis 500, he became just the 10th driver in history to win the race three times.
